Stop Lights to Roundabouts - Analogy for Leaders

Happy Thanksgiving to all! In these times of "ups and downs" and "round and round", I thought about an analogy for one of the more recent developments in the NY Capital District area. Take a look at the article found at: http://www.consultingalliance.org/Default.aspx?pageId=271820&mode=PostView&bmi=87055 and then please "join the conversation" on my http://capconsult.blogspot.com- Thanks!

  1. Ray,
I like the analogy. I would add a bit different twist. Could gatekeeps become facilitators by acting more about round-abouts? The function of the round-about is traffic control; not for control's sake, but for safety (let's hope). So, a gatekeeper in a organization should be empowered by the leader to improve the control to meet the purpose intended. If gatekeeps themselves feel empowered they can facilitate the agility of the organization. The leader can work on more pressing strategic issues. My observation as been many "leaders" focus on the gatekeeping mechanisms far too much. A new mantra, "Gatekeepers unite, bring agility and innovation to your company!"

I believe you are correct. The key is that it takes real leadership in an organization to move gatekeepers from "control" to "facilitators". In the short term (transformation from gatekeeper to catalyst), the Leader is actually working one of the "strategic adjustments" needed for the organization to function in a more agile and innovative way. I too have witnessed your observation that to many people in leadership positions have focused far too much on gatekeeping and not nearly enough on true strategic issues.
